That visit was around the new moon (it was a waning crescent phase and we were stargazing before moonrise). Nov 17, 2013 · Any time the moon isn't in the sky you're going to have a darker sky. the best time to observe is between the last and first quarter moon which is a two week period. Around the last quarter moon the moon rises late in the night and sets early around first quarter. There are lunar calendar apps that tell you the current phase and rise/set times.
