The New York Mets have made an offer to retain their free-agent first baseman, Pete Alonso, according to an online report by a former MLB star.

While we’ve said here the Mets and Pete Alonso need to figure it out, there is said to be a sizable gap in talks at the moment. That doesn’t mean he’s gone, as the Mets have closed big gaps before (see Juan Soto below),

Pete Alonso and the Mets are predicted to sign a short-term deal. Alonso has a number of teams behind him and he might reunite with the Mets.

Alonso's production would be valuable behind Soto, but contract length could be the sticking point of a new deal.

Former Mets general manager Zack Scott disagrees. He said so on Monday when he quote-tweeted a clip from SNY’s “Baseball Night in New York” where a panel of guests, including Scott, debated Alonso’s future with the Mets.
