Home insurance providers may deny you coverage or cancel your policy if you live in a region with widespread losses, you haven’t paid your policy, or you’ve filed too many claims.

A Los Angeles Times report on three of the largest home insurance companies in California and found that affiliates of Farmers Insurance, based in Los Angeles, denied approximately 50 percent of its claims, according to the survey.

A recent rule change could cause a spike in insurance premium for homeowners across California, as the costs of the Los Angeles area wildfires are passed onto them in a way that was not allowed in the past.

Many insurance companies have stopped issuing new policies to homeowners in other vulnerable states, including Louisiana and Florida. The wildfires that have devastated large parts of Los Angeles County have drawn fresh attention to the struggles many Americans face insuring their homes.

A large chunk of the cost of rebuilding after the Los Angeles wildfires is likely to shift to insurance customers throughout the state, under a little-noticed rule change last year by California’s insurance regulator.
