China’s state oil companies and large private refiners are snapping up crude cargoes from the Middle East and elsewhere, hastening preparation for potential disruption in fuel supply as tighter sanctions on Russia and Iran threaten to curb near-term crude flows.

Oil prices extended gains for a third session on Monday, with Brent rising above $80 a barrel to its highest in more than four months, as wider U.S. sanctions are expected to affect Russian crude exports to top buyers China and India.

China and India became the largest buyers of Russian crude after the European Union pulled back following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
