Tar Heels football coach Bill Belichick landed the commitment of Gary Merrill, a quarterback who is also a five-star lacrosse recruit committed to playing the sport at North Carolina.

The most intriguing part of this 2025 North Carolina recruiting class is the fact that there are three QBs committed to the Tar Heels. The latest is Gary Merrill, and the other two are three-star Au'Tori Newkirk and four-star Bryce Baker, the highest-ranked player in the North Carolina class.

Belichick has quite the connection to lacrosse, as he converted Monmouth University lacrosse star Chris Hogan into a productive NFL receiver. It's also worth noting that all three of his kids played collegiate lacrosse, and along with playing football at Wesleyan University, he was the captain of the Lacrosse team.
