NASA states that the Leonids are considered to be a major shower, with bright meteors that can also be colorful. They are also fast, traveling at speeds of 44 miles per second. Leonids are also known for their fireballs and Earth-grazer meteors.

If a little stargazing this weekend sound like fun, then a celestial light show is coming. The annual Leonid meteor shower is set to occur in a few days. The shooting stars appear in the night sky as the Earth passes through the debris coming off of comet Temple Tuttle.

The Leonid meteor shower, which became active Nov. 3, will reach its peak Saturday night into the early morning hours of Sunday. Meteor showers occur when the Earth passes through the path of the comet, traveling through pieces of debris that burn up into what look like colorful streaks as they reach the Earth’s atmosphere.
