A suspect was shot dead by police in downtown San Diego Tuesday night after gunfire erupted near an MTS Trolley platform, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is investigating the fatal shooting of a suspect by a San Diego Police Department officer in downtown San Diego.

As SDPD began to investigate, the officers shot an unidentified man in his early 20s near 1100 Kettner Blvd. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The shooting happened near the Santa Fe Depot at about 8:50 p.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the shooting under a county-wide memorandum that prevents law enforcement agencies from investigating incidents involving their own officers.
