Domestic equity benchmarks took a breather in afternoon deals on Wednesday after strong buying interest in financial shares pushed them to all-time highs in the first half of the day.

The Nifty IT index took a hit and fell nearly 2 percent, weighed down by losses in Infosys, TCS, and Tech Mahindra. Mphasis fell over 4 percent and was the biggest loser in the IT pack.

Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services and HCL Technologies were the biggest laggards in the Sensex basket.

While the US central bank is widely expected to cut interest rates after the end of its two-day monetary policy meeting tonight, there is still uncertainty about the magnitude of the cut, whether it will be 25 basis points or 50 basis points.

Within the Nifty index, several prominent companies, including Shriram Finance, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, And Nestle India were among the top gainers. On the other hand TCS, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, And Wipro were the the top losers.

Broader market indices underperformed the benchmarks, with the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices declining by 0.9 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, volatility surged, with India VIX climbing nearly 9 percent to 13.
