The new M4-based Mac Mini starts at 256GB of storage. If all you want is more space, you can get a 512GB module for $200, a 1TB for $400, or a 2TB for $800. If you've got access to the right tools, that upgrade can be almost free—a 1TB NAND flash ship can cost as little as $20-30.

To be fair, both of those other computers have significantly more memory bandwidth than the Mac Mini, and both have better GPU performance. If maxing out as many GPU cores as possible is important to you, you’re probably better off with an M4 Max, which means either a MacBook Pro or waiting for an updated Mac Studio.

Macworld Apple gets a lot of flack for its non-friendly approach to user repairs and upgrades–you can’t really do them. But there’s a ray of hope with the new Mac mini that started shipping on Friday.
