After leaving Harvard, Taniguchi worked for Walter Gropius and later Kenzo Tange. In 1975, he opened his office in Tokyo. One of his first major commissions, Shiseido Museum of Art, opened in 1978.
He worked briefly for Walter Gropius, and in the studio of Kenzo Tange between 1964 and 1972, before establishing his own practice. He is survived by his wife, Kumi Taniguchi.
