The Senate approved a bill known as the Laken Riley Act, which is aimed at expanding the federal government's mandate to detain immigrants who are in the country illegally.

Fresh off President Donald Trump’s inauguration, the Senate on Monday passed a bill that would require federal authorities to detain migrants accused of theft and violent crimes.

In a 64-35 vote, the Senate passed an immigration bill that mandates the detention of undocumented individuals accused of theft or burglary. The measure is now headed to the House, where it is expected to pass, probably becoming the first piece of legislation President Donald Trump signs into law.

If passed, it would require the Department of Homeland Security to detain immigrants without legal status accused of theft, burglary, and other crimes.

The GOP-led bill, which received some Democratic support, will now head back to the House for approval before it goes to Trump for a signature.

The Laken Riley Act - which now heads back over to the U.S. House after the Senate approved its own amended version - could become the first piece of legislation to reach President Trump’s desk.
