Vermont State Sen. Russ Ingalls, an Essex County Republican, identified the agent shot to death at the U.S. Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector as David Maland while speaking on the state senate floor Tuesday, according to a report from WPTZ, the NBC affiliate in Burlington, Vt.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was killed in a shooting on Interstate 91 in Coventry, Vermont, just south of the Canadian border, according to the FBI. A suspect in the shooting was also dead. A second suspect was injured and taken into custody, the FBI’s Albany office confirmed.

Vincent Illuzzi, the Essex County state’s attorney, described the shooting as happening during a traffic stop. He said he believed the stop was related to immigration enforcement.
