A new affordable broadband law in the Empire State has led to AT&T dropping its 5G home internet product entirely.

AT&T announced it will no longer offer its 5G Internet Air service in New York this week in response to the state’s Affordable Broadband Act going into effect on Wednesday. The company says existing users can continue to use the service for 45 days without any charges, giving them time to find an alternate broadband provider, according to CNET.

Fixed-wireless service is increasingly popular in the US, but it costs around $60 from AT&T, which says it's 'uneconomical' to offer a reduced rate for qualifying low-income residents.

New York’s Affordable Broadband Act, which requires large internet service providers to offer affordable broadband plans to low-income households, went into effect. On the same day, AT&T announced that it would be pulling its 5G home internet service from the state entirely,
