Human remains found in Kentucky have been positively identified as the man who shot 12 vehicles and wounded five people on Interstate 75 more than a week earlier.

An initial DNA test of a body believed to belong to Joseph Couch, the suspected gunman behind southern Kentucky's Sept. 7 mass shooting that left five people injured, was inconclusive, officials said Thursday.

Authorities said on Wednesday they believe they have found the body of the suspect in the Sept. 7 shooting of five people on a Kentucky highway.

It was a married couple who discovered remains that authorities believe were a man who opened fire on a Kentucky highway.

An initial DNA test on remains believed to be that of alleged I-75 shooter Joseph Couch was inconclusive, but a self-inflicted gunshot was the cause of death.

Police have a suspect in custody after a district judge was killed at the Letcher County Courthouse in Whitesburg, Kentucky, officials said.

The identification, made through DNA testing, affirmed the belief of officials. The body was discovered Wednesday after a 12-day manhunt.

The unidentified body was found Wednesday in Laurel County, where authorities said Joseph Couch, 32, opened fire at vehicles on Sept. 7.
