Four members of Delray Beach Fire Rescue, including top brass, have been placed on administrative leave following the crash between a fire truck and a Brightline train last Saturday.

Delray Beach Fire Chief Ronald Martin announced Friday on Facebook that four employees will remain on leave with pay, pending the result of an internal investigation. According to Martin, this process is standard city policy.

They are on leave “pending the results of an internal administrative investigation to determine if City and Fire Rescue policies and procedures were followed,” the fire chief said.

Three firefighters and 12 train passengers were hospitalized after a Brightline train crashed with a fire truck in crowded downtown Delray Beach late Saturday morning.

A Brightline train was stopped on the tracks, its front completely destroyed about a block away from a twisted fire truck that lay on its side.

Around 10:45 a.m., a Brightline train and a Delray Beach Fire Rescue ladder truck collided near East Atlantic Avenue and Railroad Avenue, according to city spokeswoman Gina Carter. Debris from the crash scattered across the tracks and nearby roadways.

The crossing gates were lowered and the fire truck was straddling the tracks when the high-speed train approached, a video of the collision shows.
